What is Hampton Style?

Hampton Style, also known as Hamptons Style, is my favourite interior design aesthetic. Inspired by the Hamptons, a collection of affluent seaside enclaves on Long Island, New York, it exudes timeless beauty, calm sophistication, and coastal charm.

Hampton Style makes a space feel light, airy, and effortlessly chic. I enjoy working with a neutral colour palette, adding soft whites, creams, beiges, and mild blues to create the serene atmosphere of the beach and water.

So how do we do it?

With our projects, I love using natural materials in my creations, such as wood, rattan, wicker, and linen. These components give warmth and texture to the area, giving it a comfortable yet sophisticated sense. Natural elements add a sense of relaxed richness to the room, whether a weathered wood coffee table or a linen overlay on a sofa.

Regarding furniture, I prefer traditional and timeless designs with clean lines and delicate curves. Consider soft sofas, sophisticated dining tables, and attractive seating that invites you to unwind and rest.

I enjoy incorporating coastal characteristics throughout the area, such as striped patterns, rope detailing, and sea-inspired artwork. These small details bring the beach inside, infusing the area with personality and charm.

Maximising natural light is essential in Hampton Style design. I usually combine huge windows, French doors, and skylights to fill the interiors with sunlight, resulting in a bright, airy atmosphere ideal for seaside life.

10 Hampton Style Wall Ideas

When designing your home with Hampton Style in mind, achieving that timeless coastal charm shouldn't come at the expense of endless maintenance tasks.

Here are our tried and tested Hampton wall designs that our clients fell in love with, and you'll surely do!

Light Coloured Paint

Choose light, neutral colours such as soft whites, creams, and pale blues for your walls. These colours not only provide a relaxing atmosphere, but they also hide dirt and smudges nicely, making them simple to clean.

Install wainscoting halfway up the wall for texture and visual interest. Choose sturdy, moisture- and wear-resistant materials such as PVC or composites.

Vinyl Wall Coverings

Consider utilising vinyl wallcoverings with a modest texture or pattern to achieve the appearance of grasscloth or linen without the upkeep. Vinyl is easy to clean and water-resistant, perfecting for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Tile Backsplash

Install a classic subway or hexagon tile backsplash in your kitchen or bathroom. Tiles are easy to clean and stain-resistant, making them functional and beautiful.

Shiplap Panelling:

Enjoy the maritime appeal of shiplap panelling for a timeless design. Choose pre-painted or vinyl alternatives for easy installation and low maintenance.

Faux Brick or Stone

Create an accent wall using faux brick or stone veneer to achieve a rustic yet classy look. These materials are lightweight, simple to install, and do not require sealing or maintenance.

Painted Wood Panels

Apply a fresh layer of light-coloured paint to outmoded wood panelling. This simple but effective makeover instantly brightens the room and requires little maintenance.

Wall Decal or Mural

Add personality to your walls with removable wall decals or murals of beach sceneries, coastal patterns, or botanical designs. These simple-to-apply decals may be swapped or removed as needed, making them a versatile and low-cost solution.

Acrylic or Plexiglass

Use acrylic or plexiglass sheets for framed artwork or photo displays instead of typical glass. These materials are lightweight, shatterproof, and easy to clean, making them ideal for busy households and children's rooms.

Vertical Gardens

Installing a vertical garden or living wall is a unique and low-maintenance feature. Choose low-maintenance plants, such as succulents or air plants, that require little watering and care, and appreciate the natural beauty they add to your home.

Tips for Maintaining a Hampton-Style Wall

Maintaining the pristine allure of Hampton-style walls is key to upholding the timeless charm of your coastal-inspired haven.

Let me share essential tips and tricks for preserving the beauty and integrity of your walls, ensuring they remain a focal point of effortless elegance in your home.

Regular Cleaning Routine

Maintain a consistent cleaning schedule to keep your walls appearing fresh and spotless. Dusting or wiping the walls with a microfiber cloth or feather duster can prevent dirt and grime from accumulating.

Use Mild Cleaning Solutions

When cleaning painted or wallpapered walls, use light cleaning products like diluted dish soap or a soft all-purpose cleanser. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleansers since they damage the paint or finish.

Spot Clean as Needed

Spills or stains on the walls should be cleaned up as soon as possible to prevent them from setting in. Use a damp cloth or sponge to gently blot the afflicted area, not rubbing too hard to damage the paint or wallpaper.

Protect High-Traffic Areas

Place furniture pads or bumpers on the legs of chairs, tables, and other furniture to prevent scratches or scuff marks on the walls, particularly in high-traffic areas such as hallways and entryways.

Touch Up Paint as Necessary

Keep a small pot of touch-up paint on hand to fix tiny scratches, chips, and scuffs on painted walls. Use a small brush or foam applicator to delicately apply the paint, mixing it with the surrounding area.

Seal and Protect Wood Paneling

If your walls have wood panelling or trim, use a clear sealer or protective finish to help protect them from moisture, sunlight, and daily wear and tear.

Monitor Humidity Levels

Keep an eye on the humidity levels in your home, particularly in places with high moisture levels, such as bathrooms or kitchens. A dehumidifier or ventilation fan can assist in managing humidity and prevent mould and mildew growth on the walls.

Inspect for Water Damage

Regularly check your walls for symptoms of water damage, such as peeling paint, bubbling wallpaper or damp areas. Any leaks or water intrusion issues should be addressed as soon as possible to avoid further damage and preserve the integrity of your Hampton-style walls.

Protect Artwork and Decor

Use suitable hanging hardware and techniques to safely attach artwork, mirrors, and other décor to the walls. Avoid using adhesive hooks or tapes directly to painted or wallpapered surfaces since they might cause harm when removed.

Schedule Professional Maintenance

Consider scheduling periodic inspections or maintenance checks with a professional contractor or painter to assess the condition of your walls and address any potential issues before they escalate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my Hampton-style walls?

Establishing a regular cleaning routine for your walls is recommended, aiming for at least once every few months. However, high-traffic areas may require more frequent cleaning to maintain their appearance.

Can I use any cleaning products on Hampton-style walls?

It's best to use mild cleaning solutions such as diluted dish soap or a gentle all-purpose cleaner to avoid damaging the paint or finish. Harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners should be avoided.

What should I do if I notice water damage on my walls?

If you detect signs of water damage, such as peeling paint or damp spots, it's crucial to address the issue promptly. Identify and repair any leaks or sources of water intrusion to prevent further damage and maintain the integrity of your walls.
